Your translation is quite good. Sich . . . aneignen" means to internalize information, to make it a part of yourself. Mussten is the past of muessen (you were right -- did you have to?). I am too long out of school to tell you the technical part of speech for muessten, but here is an example: You would have to do that = sie muessten das tun.
