Tips on a good dog/puppy?

My parents are separating and my mom, brother, and me are moving into an apartment on august 5th and i was wondering what dog should i get because the apartment charges $500 deposit but can be paid in payments i don't want a dog that only weighs 20-30 pounds full grown i was thinking a lab or a german shepherd or something more manlier cause im a guy.
