Was "waterboarding" or water torture an American invention?

The French were using it in the Middle Ages. The US didn't come into existence until the late 18th century, the colonies which originally formed the US came into existence in the 17th century. But Francois Villon is recorded as being put through a form of water torture known as water cure in 1461. It was also used by the Spanish Inquisition. The Inquisition also used waterboarding.
